DESCRIPTION: \n\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS WEBINAR?\n\nAnyone who works in a professional care role or supports people\nthrough all forms of loss and grief. Our content is applicable to a\nwide variety of professions including counsellors, social workers,\nteachers, emergency response teams, medical, corrections, mental\nhealth, hospice, volunteers, caregivers and more. \n\nThis webinar is suitable for anyone reflecting on ageing well. It will\nbe particularly valuable for therapists and health professionals\nworking with older adults.\n\nOVERVIEW\n\nThere is considerable diversity in the experiences and meaning of\nageing in developed countries, including Aotearoa. Although old age is\nvenerated by Māori and other collectivist cultures, in Westernised\ngroups, the attributes of youth and health are typically associated\nwith success, and older people become increasingly invisible and\npathologised. Older people are likely to have internalised ageist\nviews and, therefore, may also interpret the challenges of ageing as a\ntype of failure. \n\nIn Westernised societies, death continues to be hidden for the most\npart. Therefore, people may enter older age with limited or no\npreparation for the ever-increasing number of losses they will face.\n People may be surprised to find they are old and may grapple with\nfeeling under-resourced to live well. Life can become contracted with\nthe loss of significant friends. \n\nIn this session, we draw from Erik Erikson’s eighth stage of\ndevelopment – integrity versus despair and Joan Erikson’s\ncontribution of a ninth stage. The ninth stage emphasises the\nimportance of facing despair with faith and humility and the potential\nfor transcendence. The ninth stage considers new challenges\nexperienced with continued aging and incorporates aspects from all\nprevious eight stages of psychosocial development.\n\nWe also draw from gerotranscendence, coined by gerontologist Lars\nTornstam, which represents a greater awareness of one's own life and\nconnection to the universe, increased ties to the past, and a\npositive, transcendent perspective about life. \n\nKEY LEARNING POINTS\n\n * Reflect on societal ageism and internalised ageism\n * Consider how societal ageism and internalised ageism reinforce\neach other and impact anticipatory grief and a sense of self\n * Consider how one’s own internalised ageism may result in\npaternalism, impacting communication, advice and expectations of older\npeople\n * Identify ways older adults might experience later life\ndevelopmental stages\n * Critique aspects of communal aged care living that promote people\nbeing seen and treated as fully human at all stages of life\n * Consider ways to richly personalise care plans in aged care to\nsupport a sense of connection to self and life history\n * Reflect on staff interventions that demonstrate that they have\ngrasped the significance of what is meaningful to the older person and\ntheir family\n\nWEBINAR REGISTRATION DETAILS\n\n * Access to the live two-hour webinar\n * Access to the webinar recording for 30 days\n * Access to a downloadable PDF handout\n * Certificate of accomplishment issued on completion of a short quiz\nfor CPD/OPD points\n * NOTE: WEBINAR TIMES ARE SHOWN IN NZST OR NZDT.
