Overview
All cultures have traditions, protocols, and customs that shape how they deal with dying, death, and loss. These impact the ways in which people are able to understand and experience grief and their ongoing connections (or lack thereof) with those who have died. In te ao Māori, death is seen as a transition rather than an end, with the deceased believed to join their ancestors in the spiritual world. Grief is a communal process that involves the extended whānau and community, providing a supportive environment for mourning and remembrance.
Rangi will share the journey of a large whānau, focussing on the impacts of death on each individual member. She will illustrate how the effects of loss, grief, death, and dying can vary for each person as they support one another through the process. Rangi will explain how tikanga guides tangihanga. She will include discussion of the ways in which the values of tika, pono, aroha, manaakitanga are woven through the process and highlight the central practices of karakia and waiata, roles and role-players in the communal occasion of mourning and remembering. The goal of tangihanga is to support each person in their journey of grief and loss for those three days and nights, providing a healthy beginning.
