Overview

Neuroscience research has helped us to better understand the complexity of trauma and the multiple ways it influences a person’s life and well-being. Through this better understanding, we are able to use trauma as a lens, rather than a label, to understand and assist our students and clients.

Key Learning Points

  • What trauma is: effects on the brain and body and current neuroscience research
  • Common, and not so common responses
  • Trauma in infants, children, and teens
  • Protective factors
  • Multiple and Vicarious/Second-hand trauma
  • When families, groups, workplaces, or communities experience trauma
  • Complex trauma: PTSD and longer-term effects
  • Practical tools and approaches for effective support incl de-escalation, grounding, and calming skills
  • Resilience and post-traumatic growth
  • Resources and links
  • Self-care - reducing your own risk of vicarious trauma
