Text-based mental health support: how is it applicable to your work

Workshop for professionals
Wednesday 16th August 9:00am - 11:00am AEST
Online (Australia)
Dr Fiona Pienaar
The course "Text-based mental health support: how is it applicable to your work" has finished

Overview

This webinar will examine the development, benefits and challenges of the fast-growing medium of text-based support and the potential to incorporate it into your work in mental health.

Why is upskilling on text-based support so important?

With so many people, particularly children and youth, living in a world of digital communications, the ability to express emotions and thoughts through text rather than voice or in-person is increasingly sought-after.

It’s an approach that can offer in-the-moment, accessible, anonymous support. It can be delivered by trained volunteers (supervised by professionals), qualified therapists, peer supporters, or through an automated conversational agent (chatbot, such as Woebot).

Experienced presenter

Our presenter Dr Fiona Pienaar has worked and partnered globally in text-based mental health support. She is currently a Clinical Lead at Whakarongorau Aotearoa New Zealand Telehealth Services and Senior Clinical Advisor at Mental Health Innovations in the UK which operates the 24-hour free text crisis line, Shout UK.

Shout UK launched publicly in 2019 and has 2,100 active volunteers. The service has had a staggering 2 million text conversation with 675,000 children, young people and adults, and generally has about 2,000 text conversations every day.
